It's Not Just the Chair — 5 Habits That Load Up Your Seated Day

Having laid out the link between sedentary behaviour and mechanical load, and detailed what happens in the tissues, one question remains: why do some people accumulate more tension than others for the same number of seated hours? The answer often lies in quiet habits, repeated every day without being noticed.

A poorly set-up workstation: a load repeated hundreds of times a day

A screen that's too low, a poorly adjusted chair, a keyboard placed too far away — each of these details seems minor on its own. But repeated hundreds of times a day, over months, this small offset becomes a significant cumulative load. It's one of the first things I check in clinic: rarely a single big problem, almost always several small, neglected adjustments happening together.

Asymmetric micro-loads: what the body compensates for without you knowing

Consistently carrying a bag on the same side, always crossing the same leg, always holding the phone in the same hand during calls — these are asymmetries most people never notice. The body adapts, silently, by recruiting certain muscle groups more than others. Over time, this repeated imbalance can contribute to localised tension that seems to appear 'for no reason.'

Days with no postural variation: the effect of back-to-back meetings

Remote work has often removed the small movements that naturally punctuated an office day — getting up to speak with a colleague, walking to a meeting room. Back-to-back video calls, with no physical transition between them, can turn an entire day into a single block of stillness, without any one meeting being individually 'too long.'

None of these habits is dramatic on its own. It's their silent accumulation, day after day, that builds significant load. In the final article of this series, we'll look at concrete strategies for reducing that load — without needing to eliminate sitting altogether, which remains unavoidable in most jobs.
